Statement from Girl Scouts Troop 60510 regarding 2021 Cookie Sales

Santa Clara, CA

January 23, 2021

We have decided that we will not be selling Girl Scout cookies this season due to ethical reasons. According to several credible investigations, it has become known that the manufacturer that makes the cookies we sell uses some palm oil obtained with child labor. (See this article for some more information.)

Little Brownies Baker uses mixed source palm oil, as indicated by this logo on their cookie boxes:

While Little Brownies Baker is part of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), which certifies palm oil producers that use environmental and labor sustainable practices, the palm oil it uses is mixed with unsustainable oil. Also, recent investigations show that even some RSPO member producers are still engaging in child labor and abusive labor practices.

We commend Girl Scouts for encouraging its cookie baker to be part of the RSPO, as this is a great step in the right direction. However, it does not go far enough. We call on Girl Scouts to completely remove palm oil from its products and find an environmentally sustainable and humane alternative.

We are boycotting cookie selling in hopes that we can send a message, alongside other troops, that we will not support - nor profit from - child labor.

We hope you can understand and support our decision, and hope you will support our troop so that we may continue to do work, have adventures, grow into leaders, and help our community.

If you would like to support this cause, you can start by signing this petition, started by a sister Girl Scout, Olivia Chappin. (http://chng.it/4rZWSTxGY9)
